On Change and Excitement

Change is inevitable—the only constant in life besides death. Yet, how often do we push it away like a disgusting, crusty sock at the bottom of our gym bag? Why do we avoid change when it’s an essential part of our existence?

Consider the Earth as it orbits the sun: the seasons shift, bringing scorching heat and biting cold, trees shed their leaves, and animals instinctively adapt.

Our lives mirror that perpetual cycle of change. We experience periods of intense growth that feel overwhelming, as if we’re venturing into uncharted territory. The path ahead can be daunting simply because it’s unfamiliar.

I often remind myself of the saying, “Fear is a mile wide and an inch deep.” No matter what form change takes—a new job, a fresh relationship, a shift in my fitness routine—the fear often pales in comparison to the transformation waiting on the other side.

What if we could reframe our perspective on change? Instead of viewing it as disruption, imagine it as a chance to shake things up, learn something new, or escape a stagnant rut.

Think back to a time when even a small change led to unexpected improvements. Focusing on what you can control is key: break change down into manageable pieces and tackle them one by one.

This not only gives you a sense of control but also fuels your curiosity—ask yourself, “What’s the coolest thing that could come out of this?” Even if it seems far-fetched, envisioning a win can spark excitement.

It all starts with the story we tell ourselves. Our inner voice, often harsh and negative, can be reprogrammed. Replace thoughts like “I can’t do this” with “I got this,” “I’m excited to see where this leads,” or “I wonder what I’ll learn and how I’ll grow.” Perspective is everything, what you focus on becomes you.

You can learn to look forward to change instead of fleeing from it. I believe the point of life is simple: progression and evolution. These don’t materialize without altering our habits and behaviors.

Embrace change, and you may just find that the person you become is more than you ever imagined—and you’ll be proud of your transformation.
